N Valarmathi, The Voice Behind Chandrayaan-3, Passes Away

New Delhi: Renowned Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist N. Valarmathi, celebrated for her distinctive voice during rocket countdowns, passed away last Saturday.

The ISRO scientist’s narration was last heard during the historic launch of Chandrayaan-3.

Born on July 31, 1959, in Tamil Nadu Valarmathi attended Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School and went on to do her engineering at the Government College of Technology in Coimbatore.

She embarked on her career with ISRO in 1984. She played a crucial role in missions and notably served as the project director for RISAT-1. She was also the first person to receive the Abdul Kalam Award.

Former ISRO director Dr. P V Venkitakrishnan took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to condone her demise.

“The voice of Valarmathi Madam will not be there for the countdowns of future missions of ISRO from Sriharikotta. Chandrayan 3 was her final countdown announcement. An unexpected demise . Feel so sad.Pranams!,” he wrote.
