FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, our team found the same video on a  YouTube channel named Solo Catecumenos dated August 2023. The title of the video reads in English, “This is how the million and a half young people spent the night in #Lisbon #Lisbon2023 #WYD2023.” According to the caption, the video is related to World Youth Day. It is to be noted that the earthquake took place in September 2023. It suggests that the viral video is not related to the Morocco earthquake.

According to the report of France 24 dated 06 August 2023, over 1.5 million people reportedly gathered at Tejo Park in Lisbon on August 5 to participate in World Youth Day presided over by Pope Francis. The event lasted from August 1 to 6, with young Catholics from around the world arriving on August 5, planning to spend the night until the final mass on Sunday. The Pope made his appearance in the ‘Popemobile’ shortly after 19:00 GMT for this prayer vigil that resembled a giant festival.

We also found similar visuals related to this event in a video report of France 24 which shows visuals of attendees sleeping in the open at Tejo Park.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video is related to World Youth Day which took place in Lisbon. It has nothing to do with the recent earthquake in Morocco.
