“The King” Virat Kohli recently stormed past Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record of 13,000 ODI runs, when he scored a century against Pakistan in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023 Super Four. He was later rested for the home series against Australia. Against this backdrop, a post claiming that Australian legend Adam Gilchrist has criticised BCCI for resting Kohli in the series so as to prevent him from breaking Sachin’s record is extensively circulated on social media.
A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: বিরাট কোহলিকে এখন নিয়মিত ওডিআই ক্রিকেটে বিশ্রাম দেওয়া হচ্ছে। আমি মনে করছি ভারতীয় ক্রিকেট বোর্ড শচীনের রেকর্ডের পরিবর্তন চাইছে না। ………….. অ্যাডাম গিলক্রিস্ট (English translation: Virat Kohli is now regularly rested in ODI cricket. I think Indian cricket board is not looking for a change in Sachin’s record. ………….. Adam Gilchrist)

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.
Running a Google keyword search to check whether Gilchrist said anything like this or not, the NM team traced a news article on sports website Sportskeeda, dated September 21, 2023, and titled: “Never said this” – Adam Gilchrist responds to fake quote on Virat Kohli attributed to him.
In the article, Gilchrist has denied ever saying anything like this and that the claims were completely false. The article also features a tweet on the official handle of the former wicket-keeper batsman clearly negating the quote under his name.
Another article in Wisden, dated September 20, 2023, debunks the same claim. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming Adam Gilchrist criticised BCCI for resting Kohli so as to prevent him from breaking Sachin’s record, is false.
