Fact Check: Old Video Fictitiously Linked To Recent Floods In New York

On September 29, a state of emergency was declared throughout New York due to severe rainfall leading to flash floods in various regions. Amid this crisis, numerous videos began circulating on social media, purportedly displaying the extensive damage caused by the floods.

One such video features seven distinct clips, showcasing subway stations submerged. In the footage, water is seen cascading from the roofs of the trains and surging through the stations. This video is widely shared on social media linking it to the recent floods in New York.

NewMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING. 

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes the NM team traced a report in The Mirror, dated September 2, 2021. According to the report, tropical storm Ida wreaked havoc on the north-eastern regions of America, prompting a state of emergency to be declared in New York. 

Among the seven clips, this particular report included visuals from the video depicting water cascading from the roof of a train. It had also featured the extended versions of two other videos displaying subway stations affected by the floods.

An Instagram post by Nieves Zuberbühler, a journalist located in New York, dated September 2, 2021, had featured all the seven clips in question, crediting an account “subwaycreatures” for some of them.

Thus, it is confirmed that the viral video is old and unrelated to the recent floods in New York City.
