FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.
Looking closely at the video, the NM team noticed @ghost3dee written at the bottom. Looking for social media channels linked to the username, our team identified a YouTube channel with the same name. The About section of the channel informs that it belongs to a Qatari VFX Artist and father of Churro — the CGI octopus.
We also came across a YouTube shorts video that matches with the viral clip.
The caption does not specify the location of the video and further describes that the video has been made using CGI.
Searching further on the artist’s Instagram handle, we traced the same video, dated September 25, 2023 (5 days before the New York floods). Also, the caption confirms that the video has been made using CGI and was ‘Rendered on farms from — @snaprenderfarm’
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming an octopus climbed a car in a parking in New York amidst ongoing floods, is false.
