New Delhi: Australia secured their first win of the 2023 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Monday. The Australian bowlers asserted dominance from the outset, while the batsmen maintained their composure, ultimately securing a five-wicket victory.
Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh both notched half-centuries, while Marnus Labuschagne contributed with 40 runs. Additionally, quick innings from Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis propelled Australia to victory, securing the win in just 35.2 overs.
Dilshan Madushanka bagged three wickets for Sri Lanka, while Dunith Wellalage took one wicket.
Earlier in the first innings, Adam Zampa’s leg-spin brilliance disrupted the Sri Lankan batting order, thwarting their chances of capitalising on the opening century partnership in their ICC Cricket World Cup clash against Australia at Lucknow on Monday.
Australia needs 210 runs to register their first win in the tournament after Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 209 runs in 43.3 overs.
Kusal Perera was the highest run scorer for the Sri Lankan team, accumulating 78 runs. Following closely, Pathum Nissanka contributed 61 runs, and Charith Asalanka chipped in with 25 runs. However, the rest of the players failed to even reach double-digit scores, resulting in a batting collapse.
Adam Zampa showcased his leg-spin wizardry, securing a four-wicket haul, while Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc each claimed two wickets. Glenn Maxwell also contributed with one wicket.
