Fact Check: Names Mentioned In Viral List Of Citizens Kidnapped By Hamas Are Of Nepalis, NOT Indians

Amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict claiming thousands of lives, the photocopy of a list — featuring the names of deceased or injured persons in Kibbutz Alumin near the Gaza Strip during the recent Hamas attack — is going viral on social media. Many users claim that these were names of Indian citizens kidnapped and then killed by the militant group.

A Facebook user shared this post and wrote: “As per sources, 17 Indians were kidnapped by Hamas on Saturday in Israel. Out of 17, 10 r killed r executed . No one from the I.N.D.I.A. alliance has the guts to give a statement on these kidnapped Indians. But they support students of Aligarh Muslim Univ, who came out in support of Hamas with a March.”

This Facebook post can be seen here.

It is being widely shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

NewMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

It is to be noted that the addresses of the citizens mentioned in the viral post are all based in Nepal. According to a report in Nepal Press — a Nepal-based media outlet, dated October 8, 2023, the names mentioned in the post is of Nepali nationals and not Indian citizens. The Nepali Ambassador to Israel, Kanta Rijal, has also confirmed the death of 10 Nepalis in the attack of Hamas.

The deceased have been identified as Narayan Prasad Neupane of Ghodaghodi, Kailali, Ganesh Kumar Nepali of Jaya Prithvi-6, Bajhang, Ashish Chaudhary of Bauniya-3, Kailali, Dipesh Raj Bista of Lekhak-5, Darchula, Ananda Sah of Sapahi-6, Dhanusha, Rajesh Kumar Swarkar of Madhuban, Sunsari, Rajan Fulara of Pachanali-3, Doti, Padam Thapa of Lamikhal-8, Pravesh Bhandari of Shraddha-3, Salyan, Lokendra Singh Dhami of Darchula. Similarly, six injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital while one is missing.

We also found an official press release by Nepal’s Embassy in Israel, dated October 15, 2023, confirming the names of five deceased students that match with the list of the viral post.

Thus, we can conclusively say that the names mentioned in the viral post are of Nepali citizens kidnapped by the Islamic militant group, NOT Indians.
