Kerala: The Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), S Somanath, expressed his desire for increased female representation in the nation’s space missions. During an event at the Pournami Kavu temple, he shared his hopes for seeing more female astronauts participating in ISRO’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission.
Somanath clarified that, as astronauts for the initial Gaganyaan mission had already been selected and trained, involving women in this mission is not currently feasible. However, he expressed optimism about greater female participation in future Gaganyaan missions, stating, “More women astronauts in space missions are part of my wish list, and I only echoed the voice of the nation, including that of the Prime Minister.”
Earlier, Somanath had mentioned that ISRO prefers women fighter test pilots or female scientists for the Gaganyaan program and is actively considering sending them on future missions. The ISRO chairman also revealed plans to send a female humanoid robot on an unmanned Gaganyaan spacecraft next year.
The Gaganyaan mission aims to send humans into space on a Low Earth Orbit for three days and safely return them to Earth. Somanath emphasized the importance of identifying suitable female candidates for such missions in the future.
During Vijayadasami, a significant Hindu festival, Somanath engaged in spiritual activities and prayers at the temple. Following his prayers, he spent over 30 minutes helping young children write their first letters as part of an educational initiation. Somanath clarified that this ceremony is not associated with religion but is a symbolic introduction to education. He emphasized the significance of passing on knowledge and blessings to children on this auspicious day.
Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre Director Unnikrishnan were also present at the Pournami Kavu temple to participate in the educational initiation for children.
