Amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine war, an image of a father wailing with his dead son’s covered body is widely shared on social media claiming that it depicts an Israeli father whose son was strangled by Hamas militants.

The image is shared on Facebook with the caption, “পিতার কোলে সন্তানের মস্তক বিহীন লাস ।হ্যাঁ এই ভাবে ৪০টি শিশুকে হত্যা করেছে হামাস আল্লাহ আকবর ধ্বনি দিয়ে। এই হামাসের পাসেই কং বাম, ভাবা যায়” (English translation: The child’s dead body in the father’s lap. FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

With Reverse Image Search, the NM team traced a news article in Washington Post, dated November 16, 2012, featuring more pictures, including the viral image, with a headline: “The Israeli-Palestinian politics of a bloodied child’s photo”. The caption in the report indicates that the BBC Arabic journalist Jihad Misharawi holding the lifeless body of his 11-month-old son, who tragically lost life in Gaza due to a rocket attack, stating that it depicts an Israeli father whose son was strangled by Hamas militants, along with 40 other children.

Another report in the Daily Mail, dated November 15, 2012, says that the child in the photo was identified as Omar, who lost his life in an Israeli missile strike targeting Hamas militants. The photograph was taken at Shifa Hospital in Gaza.

Also, the United Nations, in a report dated March 2013, attributed the incident to the Hamas organisation, stating that their rockets, initially aimed at Israel, missed its target and struck inside Gaza. Hamas did not provide a response to this statement. Meanwhile, an Israeli army spokesperson mentioned that they could not definitively confirm whether their rocket hit the residence of the BBC journalist.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that 2012 image of a father holding his dead son is falsely linked to the recent Israel-Palestine war.
