Fact Check: Viral Video From Romania Falsely Shared As US Troops Landing In Israel

Date:

The US military conducted “self-defence strikes” on two facilities in eastern Syria on October 26. These strikes were in response to a series of attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria, and the facilities were allegedly used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The U.S. has expressed support for Israel’s offensive in Gaza and has positioned warships and aircraft in the region to assist if needed.

Amid these geopolitical events, a video depicting soldiers getting off from an aircraft is widely shared on social media. People claim that these were American troops arriving in Israel.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Hundreds of US soldiers landed in Israel.. France is sending the Tonnerre helicopter carrier, capable of carrying dozens of helicopters and hundreds of marine soldiers, to Israel. Britain, Germany and Australia also send their military groups to the region, warships, special forces, aircraft and more. The Pentagon reports that 900 US troops are being deployed or are already in the Middle East from the continental US, including air defence operators”.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Running the video keyframes through Reverse Image Search, the NM team identified a longer version of the same video uploaded to a YouTube channel named “Murphy” on June 30, 2022. According to this channel, the video featured the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Soldiers of the US Army arriving in Mihail Kogalniceanu, Romania, on June 28, 2022.

The video description reads: “101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Soldiers arrive in Mihail Kogalniceanu, Romania, June 28, 2022. The 101st units are supporting V Corps’ mission to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank and engage in multinational exercises with partners across the European continent to reassure their Nation’s Allies and deter further Russian aggression”.

We also found images of the 101st division’s arrival in Mihail Kogalniceanu on June 28, 2022, available on Alamy, the stock image site.

We also came across numerous articles reporting on various contingents of the 101st Airborne Division arriving in Mihail Kogalniceanu in June 2022. The US Department of Defence’s website also featured a post about its soldiers’ arrival in Mihail Kogalniceanu on June 28, 2022.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video from Romania is shared as US troops landing in Israel.
