Fact Check: 2018 Images From Yemen and Gaza Falsely Shared As Recent US Airstrikes In Syria

Date:

A set of two pictures of an explosion is doing the rounds on social media claiming that the airstrikes launched by the US on two locations in eastern Syria that were linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The post reads: ” And so it begins… BREAKING: The US military has carried out MULTIPLE AIRSTRIKES on two locations in eastern Syria. Allegedly the attack was in response to an earlier attack this week by militant groups on the U.S. MILITARY BASE in northern Syria…which begs the obvious question: WTAF is there a US military base in Syria….???”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

Through the Google Reverse Image Search, the NM team found the same visual in a report by Reuters, dated 2018, with a caption: “A Houthi arms depot explodes after it was hit by airstrikes in Sanaa, Yemen, January 31, 2018. REUTERS/Khaled Abdullah.”

Reuters Pictures also carries the same image, dated January 31, 2018, in Sanaa, Yemen.

This proves that the image is old and is from Yemen.

A Reverse Image Search of the second picture finds an article by The Week, dated July 21, 2018, carrying the same image with a caption: “A picture taken on July 20, 2018 shows explosions from Israeli bombardment in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip | AFP”

The same image was also available on Getty Images with a caption: “TOPSHOT – A picture taken on July 20, 2018 shows explosions from Israeli bombardment in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip. Israeli aircraft and tanks hit targets across the Gaza Strip on July 20 after shots were fired at troops on the border, the army said, with Hamas reporting several members of its military wing killed in the latest flare-up in months of tensions. This proves that the above image is an old one from Gaza.

Thus, it is clear that the 2018 images from Gaza and Yemen are being shared as recent US airstrikes in eastern Syria.
