World Cup 2023: No Fireworks In Delhi, Mumbai Matches Due To Worsening Air Pollution, Says BCCI

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided not to include fireworks in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 matches in Delhi and Mumbai, considering the deteriorating air quality in these major cities.

With one match remaining in Delhi and three in Mumbai (on November 2, November 7, and November 15), the decision extends to the semifinal, highlighting environmental concerns during the cricket tournament.

“BCCI is sensitive to environmental concerns. I took up the matter formally with the ICC and there won’t be any fireworks display in Mumbai, which can add to the pollution level. The Board is committed to combating environmental issues and will always place the interest of our fans and stakeholders at the forefront. The BCCI acknowledges the urgent concern surrounding air quality in both Mumbai and New Delhi,” said BCCI secretary Jay Shah as quoted by news agency PTI.

The decision comes at a time when both metropolitan areas are dealing with severe pollution levels, presenting possible health hazards to the public.

Delhi continued to experience “very poor” air quality for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday, registering an air quality index (AQI) of 371 at 10 am. Mumbai has also faced concerning conditions in recent days.

On Wednesday, Mumbai’s air quality was categorized as ‘moderate,’ with an AQI of 175 at 10 am. The Bombay High Court expressed concerned about the “deteriorating” air quality index in Mumbai on Tuesday, taking suo motu cognizance of the issue.

Due to the escalating air quality concerns, the Supreme Court issued a directive on Tuesday, instructing the governments of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan to submit affidavits outlining the measures they have taken to address air pollution.
