Fact Check: 2021 Image Of Tunnel Restoration Work Inspection In Gaza Falsely Linked To Israel-Hamas War

Date:

A video showing a correspondent of Russia’s state news network Russia Today (RT) entering a tunnel and reporting from inside is widely shared on social media, linking it to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Many users claim that Israel targeted the Gaza Terror Tunnel Network and Hamas granted access to a Russia Today reporter to visit their tunnel network.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “As Israel begins targeting Gaza Terror Tunnel Network, Hamas Terror groups give access to the RT  journalist to visit the Tunnel Network. This is the RT on-ground report from underneath Gaza — the Gaza Metro. Not a single Gazan can take shelter in these tunnels, reserved for Hamas terrorists, while Palestinians bear the brunt of Hamas war on Israel and die above ground”.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Running the video key frames through Reverse Image Search, the NM team identified a report posted on the Twitter account of RT Arab, dated June 14, 2021, containing the same video. As per the tweet, the RT team ventured into the Saraya al-Quds tunnels beneath the ground of Gaza to assess their depth and inspect the restoration work carried out after the previous conflict.

The video was also posted on an unverified YouTube channel, ‘Southern Women’, on June 15, 2021.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is old and unrelated to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
