Kolkata: In a gripping showdown at the second ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final, Australia clinched victory over South Africa by three wickets, securing their spot in the ODI World Cup final for the eighth time.
The South African team was bowled out for 212 runs in 49.4 overs, setting a target that Australia successfully chased down in 47.2 overs.
In the first innings, Australian skipper Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc spearheaded the bowling attack, each claiming three wickets, while Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head secured two crucial wickets apiece. The Australian bowlers maintained dominance, preventing South Africa from achieving a substantial total. Despite the Proteas’ batting appearing clueless, David Miller showcased a spirited century, supported by Heinrich Klaasen, who contributed 47 runs.
During the chase, Travis Head emerged as the top run scorer for the Australian team, securing a rapid half-century. However, Australia faced difficulties in the middle overs against spin, resulting in the loss of wickets. Nevertheless, Cummins and Starc remained composed, showcasing their resilience to guide Australia to the finals against the undefeated Indian side.
The stage is now set for an electrifying final as Australia prepares to face off against India at the grand Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad this Sunday.
