Ashneer Grover, Wife Stopped At Airport Amid Fraud Probe

Date:

New Delhi: Former managing director at BharatPe, Ashneer Grover, and his wife Madhuri Jain were reportedly stopped at the Indira Gandhi International Airport while en route to New York.

According to the reports, Ashneer and his wife were going on a vacation to New York and were stopped by the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi police.”

The Economic Offences Wing had issued a lookout circular (LoC) earlier in the week as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud at BharatPe. Sindhu Pillai, joint commissioner of police (EOW), clarified that the couple was detained to prevent them from travelling abroad and emphasised that they have not been formally arrested.

“They were detained before security check and were asked to return to their Delhi residence and appear for the investigation at the EOW office located at Mandir Marg the following week.” Sindhu Pillai, joint commissioner of police (EOW) said.

Ashneer Grover, commenting on the situation, revealed, “I hadn’t gotten any notices or calls from EOW since the FIR in May until 8 am today, 17 November, which was seven hours after he got back from the airport.”

He further explained, “At immigration, they said, ‘LoC laga hua hai sir – EOW se check kar ke batate hai (There is an LoC, sir… we will check with EoW and let you know).”

Ashneer in his tweet also mentioned that he did not receive any communication or summon from EOW since FIR in May till 8 AM today 17 morning (7 hours after returning from the airport). Despite the odd timing of the notification, Grover expressed his willingness to cooperate, stating, “Today morning, EoW summon was home delivered – will cooperate as always.”

The accusations against Grover and his wife involved the alleged use of backdated invoices to move funds from BharatPe’s accounts, resulting in payments for recruitment work commissions and other fictitious transactions. The potential consequences of conviction include a jail term ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.

In response to the situation, Grover asserted, “I would be the ‘last man standing’ after his critics faded away.”
