New Delhi: With so many public figures right from big movie stars to some big politicians being a victim of deepfake videos, which was followed by social media debates and outrage regarding the possible dangers of technology, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said that soon an official will be oppointed to take appropriate actions against these kind of contents by the central government.
The minister said, that a proper portal will be developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) where users can flag any of the IT rule violation. He said, ‘Meity will assist users to notify it about violation of IT rules and assist them in filing a First Information Report or FIR’.
He further added that the FIR will be filed against the intermediary, and incase if they also disclose the origination of the content, then the entity which has posted the content will also face the charges.
However, the minister asserted that the present law and rules do have clear provision to deal with Deepfake,
The minister has also informed that 7 day time period has been given to social media platforms so that they can aalign their terms and condition as per the IT rules. ‘From today onwards, there is zero tolerance for violation of IT rules’, he said.
Deepfake has been such a matter of concern that even Prime Minister Modi in an event last week had flagged his ‘big concern’ around the use of AI to create Deepfake contents.
‘During the times of Artificial Intelligence, it is important that technology should be used responsibly’, the PM had said.
As per the central government’s rule creation and circulation of any kind of Deepfake content carries a penalty of Rs 1 lakh and 3 years in the jail.
Given the concerns around the misuse of the technology and how these Deepfake videos can affect the lives of big personalities at large an advisory was issued by Meity. A statement read, ‘Remove any such content when reported within 36 hours of such reporting and ensure expeditious action, well within the timeframes stipulated under the IT Rules 2021, and disable access to the content or information’.
