Bihar Faces Backlash For Scraping Holidays For Some Hindu Festivals In 2024 School Calendar

Date:

Patna: Controversy has erupted in Bihar as the Nitish Kumar-led government released two school calendars for 2024. The BJP has accused the state government of appeasement, claiming that it has offended Hindus by reducing the number of Hindu festivals and increasing holidays for Muslim festivals.

According to the calendar released by the state education department, there are no holidays for festivals such as Shivratri, Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Teej, and Jitiya in the year 2024.

On the other hand, Urdu medium schools have been granted a three-day break for Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha (Bakrid). However, in non-Urdu medium schools, there will be only a one-day holiday for both Eid festivals.

Addressing the issue, Sushil Modi told news agency ANI, “Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government has shown an anti-Hindu face and taken a decision to hurt the sentiments of the Hindus. The holidays for Hindu festivals have been selectively slashed while holidays for Muslim festivals have been increased.”

Union Minister Giriraj Singh also took a dig at the new school calendars and said, “Islamic Republic of Bihar. Nitish and Lalu governments extended holidays for Muslim festivals in schools but ended holidays for Hindu festivals.”

“The way Lalu Yadav and Nitish government are attacking Hindus, in future they will be known as Mohammad Nitish and Mohammad Lalu,” he wrote on X.

About The New School Calanders

The state education department released schedules for Urdu medium schools and non-Urdu medium schools on November 27. According to the department, the primary aim of the calendar is to ensure a minimum of 220 teaching days as per the Right to Education guidelines.

Urdu medium schools will observe a weekly off every Friday, and a two-day holiday is scheduled for Muharram while non-Urdu medium schools will have only a one-day holiday for Muharram. There will be a one-day break for Diwali, two days for Holi, and three days each for Durga Puja and Chhath Puja.

In this year’s school calendar, Teej was allocated a two-day holiday, and Jitiya had a one-day off. However, these festival holidays have now been removed.

This is the first time that the Bihar education department has issued separate calendars for Urdu-medium schools and non-Urdu medium schools.
