Fact Check: 2021 Images Viral As India Defeated Australia In Hockey World Championship

Date:

A collage is viral on social media which shows Indian women’s hockey players in blue jerseys celebrating and hugging each other on the field, while Australian players appear to be disappointed and holding their heads. The image is being shared with claims that it depicts India’s victory over Australia in the Women’s Hockey World Championship.

A Facebook user shared this image and wrote, “रोना धोना क्रिकेट का करते रहे, और हार गए. लेकिन महिला हॉकी टीम वर्ल्ड championship जीत गयी वो भी ऑस्ट्रेलिया से…इसका कहीं नाम तक नहीं… हमें फख्र है हमारी बहनों पर….जय हिन्द जय भारत”

[English Translation: We Kept whining about cricket, and lost. But the women’s hockey team won the world championship and that too from Australia. There is no mention of this anywhere… We are proud of our sisters… Jai Hind Jai Bharat.]

It is being widely shared on Facebook and Twitter with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

We ran a search and found that the Indian women’s hockey team recently defeated Japan to crown themselves Asian Champions Trophy winners. The hosts beat Japan 4-0 in the final at Ranchi on November 05. However, we could not find any credible media reports which can corroborate the viral claim about India recently defeating Australia to win the World Championship.

We then moved on to check the images in circulation.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search, the NM team traced the first image on Getty, where the picture was uploaded on August 02, 2021. The caption of the image reads, “TOKYO, JAPAN – AUGUST 02: Navneet Kaur, Neha Neha and Lalremsiami of Team India celebrate their 1-0 win with teammates while Karri Somerville reacts after the Women’s Quarterfinal match between Australia and India on day ten of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Oi Hockey Stadium on August 02, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. We also found the same image in a report of The Quint dated August 02, 2021. According to the report, the Indian women’s hockey team beat world number 2 Australia 1-0 in the quarter-final. Drag flicker Gurjit Kaur scored the all-important goal in the 22nd minute with a powerful flick that deflected off a defender’s stick into the goal.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search, the NM team traced the viral image in a report of The Guardian dated August 2, 2021. The title of the report reads, “Hockeyroos’ quest to end Olympic medal drought spoiled by quarter-final defeat to India.” The photo description reads, “India’s Neha and Navneet Kaur celebrate after defeating Australia 1-0 in their Olympic hockey quarter-final. Thus, it is confirmed from the above information that the viral images are old and the claim of the false.
