Fact Check: Edited Image Of Jashodaben Goes Viral With False Narrative

Date:

An image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s estranged wife Jashodaben is doing the rounds on social media, showing her holding a paper that reads:  “If my husband was never faithful to me, then how can he be faithful towards you or the people of this country? Is this women empowerment?”

The text on the placard reads: “जब मेरे पति मेरे ना हो सके तो आपके या देशवासियों के कैसे हो सकेगा
क्या यही है महिला सशक्तिकरण..?”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be edited.

Putting the picture through Reverse Image Search, the NM team found the original picture in an article by South China Morning Post, dated November 2014, with a headline: “Indian premier Narendra Modi’s estranged wife demands recognition.”

Another report by NDTV, dated 2014, mentions that ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s estranged wife, Jashodaben, has filed an RTI request asking for an explanation of the sort of security that she gets from the government. After Modi was elected in May, Jashodaben was given round-the-clock security.

In the original image, we can see that she is holding a document and the viral text has been edited. Here’s a comparison of both.

Therefore, it is confirmed that the image has been edited, and gone viral with false claims.
