FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Google Keyword Search for Nile turning red, the NM team could not find any results. If the water of the world’s longest river started turning red, it would have made headlines in major newspapers, globally.

However, our team found an article in BBC Science Focus on January 27, 2023, titled: In pictures: Welcome to the most diverse waters on planet Earth

The article informs about the salt lake of Chile’s Atacama Desert. One of these lakes is — Laguna Roja, situated 12,000 feet above sea level around the Andes mountains of Chile. According to the report, the presence of algae and a high concentration of salt turns the colour of the water to red. It further states that scientists from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Chilean University of Antofagasta are doing their research on the microorganisms present in the water.

Checking more about the lake on Google Maps, our team traced one of the photospheres that matches with the mountains shown in the viral clip, confirming that the viral image is Laguna Roja, not Nile.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show red water in river Nile, is fake.
