New Delhi: After Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt, a new deepfake video has surfaced on the internet, featuring actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The digitally manipulated video showcases Chopra providing brand endorsements and investment advice and has gained traction on various social media platforms.
A deepfake is a form of synthetic media that uses artificial intelligence to modify or create visual and audio content, frequently with malicious intent, to give the impression of authenticity.
In the deepfake, Chopra’s voice has been manipulated, and the original lines have been substituted with a fictitious brand promotion.
This development follows a series of controversies surrounding deepfakes involving actors and other notable figures. The government has responded by formulating strategies for internet regulations to address the escalating threat.
MIT said that “deepfake” first surfaced in late 2017 when a Reddit user, identified by the same name, established a platform on an online news and aggregation site to disseminate pornographic videos produced through open-source face-swapping technology. Deepfake employs a variant of AI known as deep learning to create fabricated images or videos depicting unreal events.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday met social media platforms to assess their advancements in countering misinformation and deepfakes. He said that advisories would be issued within the next two days, aiming for complete compliance by the platforms.
