Indian-Australian Professor Honored with Dr. Dorothy Jones Prize 2023

Sydney, Australia: Western Sydney University’s Distinguished Professor Brajesh Singh, based at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, has been bestowed with the esteemed Dr. Dorothy Jones Prize for microbiology at the renowned EMI lecture 2023.

The Dorothy Jones Prize, named after the distinguished Dr. Dorothy Jones, former President of Applied Microbiology International, is a coveted accolade within the Applied Microbiology International Horizon Awards. These awards acknowledge exceptional contributions to applied microbiology, celebrating trailblazers in the field and recognizing research that shapes the future.

Distinguished Professor Singh, a global expert in microbial functional ecology, has dedicated a decade to advancing his knowledge in Scotland before joining the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment and subsequently becoming the Director of the Global Centre for Land-Based Innovation in 2015.

His groundbreaking research delves into the quantitative relationships between soil microbial diversity, ecosystem functions, and the impact of natural and anthropogenic pressures. Singh’s work offers solutions to critical global challenges such as environmental degradation and food insecurity.

Singh’s research findings, notably establishing a causal link between soil microbial and faunal soil biodiversity and key ecosystem functions, have significantly advanced areas of ecosystem science. Moreover, his research has informed policy decisions at regional, national, and global levels. His recommendations have played a pivotal role in shaping bilateral engagements in agribusiness and trade between Australia, India, and the European Union. The distinguished professor has not only contributed to policy but has also developed innovations to enhance the effectiveness of existing microbial products.

Currently collaborating with government and inter-governmental bodies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Singh is actively involved in training farmers, consultants, and policy advisors in sustainable agriculture and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The accolade solidifies Distinguished Professor Brajesh Singh’s standing as a leader in microbial research, emphasizing his influential contributions to science and sustainable practices on a global scale.
