Bengaluru: Bengaluru has claimed the top spot among Indian cities with the highest recorded incidents of acid attacks on women, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The data showed that in 2022, Bengaluru alone witnessed eight acid attacks on women, surpassing all other cities in India.
According to the NCRB report, Bengaluru Police registered six acid attack cases in 2022, ranking it highest. Delhi followed with six acid attack incidents, and Ahmedabad recorded three such cases. However, Delhi Police registered seven acid attack attempt cases, while Bengaluru Police documented three such cases in 2022.
The acid attack on a 23-year-old woman in Bengaluru in April 2022 shocked the nation, drawing considerable attention nationwide. The victim, recently offered a job, asked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to direct officials to provide employment in his secretariat to acid attack survivors from 2022.
The survivor, an MCom graduate, along with her parents, appealed for a job during ‘Janata Darshan,’ and upon hearing her plight, the chief minister promptly promised employment, as per the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
In the ongoing legal proceedings, the police submitted a comprehensive 770-page charge sheet to the 13th additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) court, naming 92 witnesses, including statements from two eyewitnesses recorded under section 164 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
