“End Of Colonial-Era Laws”: PM Modi As Rajya Sabha Passes Three Criminal Bills

Date:

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the three crucial criminal bills: The Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023, and The Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023. These bills mark a substantial shift by replacing the existing IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter (formerly known as Twitter) to applaud the passage of three bills in the Rajya Sabha, calling it as the end of colonial-era laws.

“The passage of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 is a watershed moment in our history. These Bills mark the end of colonial-era laws. A new era begins with laws centered on public service and welfare. These transformative Bills are a testament to India’s commitment to reform. They bring our legal, policing, and investigative systems into the modern era with a focus on technology and forensic science.”

“These Bills ensure enhanced protection for the poor, marginalised and vulnerable sections of our society. At the same time, these Bills come down heavily on organised crime, terrorism and such offences which strike at the root of our peaceful journey to progress. Through them, we have also bid goodbye to the outdated sections on sedition.” the Prime Minister added.

During the debate, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “After its complete implementation, from filing of the FIR to the judgement, the entire process will be online.”

“We had said that the process of justice will be speeded up, the laws will be simplified and that the laws will be Bharatiya.” he added.

He further said that the motive of these three bills is not to punish but to give justice.

“The motive of the three bills is not to punish but to give justice. After 75 years of independence, the Modi government has tried to introduce changes and reform the colonial laws. Since 2019, consultations and discussions have been going on over these three bills,” Amit Shah said.

Home Minister Amit Shah replied to the debate on the three bills and said the legislation are in consonance with the spirit of the Constitution.
