President Murmu Gives Assent to Criminal Law Bills Replacing IPC, CrPC, And Evidence Act

Date:

New Delhi: Three criminal bills have replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Evidence Act after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu on Monday.

Enacted into law, namely the Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, 2023, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, these bills were successfully passed by both Houses of Parliament during the recently concluded Winter session.

Despite the mass suspension of over two-thirds of Opposition MPs for unruly behavior during the discussion on the December 13 Parliament security breach, the bills were passed through a voice vote in the Rajya Sabha.

Experts believe that these new laws will intensify penalties for terrorism, lynching, and offenses threatening national security.

While introducing the criminal bills in the Rajya Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed that once implemented, these laws would put an end to the “tareekh-pe-tareekh” era, ensuring justice is delivered within three years.
