Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture, the NM team traced a news article on The Telegraph Online, dated August 5, 2020, with a title: Wearing black, Congress leaders stage massive protest; Rahul, others detained. The picture in the article matches with the viral image, informing that Congress leaders wore black clothes and marched towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan as part of the party’s nationwide protest over price rise, unemployment, and GST hike on essential items.
There was no mention of the laying down of the foundation stone of Ram Janmabhoomi anywhere in the article. The Wire, too, had carried the image with a report on the same day, saying that the Delhi Police denied these leaders permission to protest.
The image sources in both articles have been given to PTI. These pictures also can be found in the image archives of PTI.
The description of the image here, too, confirms that the picture is from the Congress’ protest for rising prices, GST, and unemployment.
Given that the foundation stone of Ram Temple in Ayodhya was laid down on August 6, 2020, there is no way the viral image can be linked to the same.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming Congress leader protested the laying down of the foundation stone for the Ram Temple by wearing black clothes on August 5, 2020, is baseless.
