Fact Check: 2023 Video From Sylhet In Bangladesh Viral With Misleading Claims

Date:

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina recently won the assembly elections for the fourth straight term. Against this backdrop, a viral video showing some miscreants setting cars on fire, running rampant, and vandalizing cars on a street at night is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim the video is from Dhaka before the day of the elections on January 7, 2024.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: ঢাকাবাসী কেউ ঘর থেকে বের হবেন না ঢাকার অবস্থা খুবই ভয়াবহ পরিস্থিতি খারাপ!! (English translation: People of Dhaka should not go out of the house. The condition of Dhaka is very dangerous, the situation is bad!!)

You can check the post here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team found a Facebook post, dated November 26, 2023, on an unverified page. The video matches with the viral clip informing that the incident happened in Sylhet.

We also came across a news article in a Bangladesh local daily — Prathoma, on the same day, confirming that the incident actually happened in Sylhet, not Dhaka.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the claim by the viral post is baseless.
