Fact Check: 2018 Post Of PM Modi Flying Kites In Indonesia Falsely Linked To Makar Sankranti Celebrations

Date:

A video featuring PM Narendra Modi flying a kite is being widely circulated on social media. Many users claim that Modi participated in kite-flying activities during Makar Sankranti.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “# आज मकरसंक्रांति है! मोदी जी पतंग उड़ा रहे हैं गजब का बंदा है कोई उत्सव, राजनीतिक कार्यक्रम, सामुहिक, सामाजिक कार्यक्रम नहीं छोड़ते हैं. साथ ही सरकार चलाना 18 घंटे काम और विपक्ष से भी भिड़ना भगवान ने कुछ अलग ही बनाया है. न भूतो न भविष्यते धन्य हे भारत और भारत वासी” (English translation: #Today is Makar Sankranti! Modi ji is flying kites, he is a wonderful person, and he does not miss any festival, political programme, group or social programme. Besides, working 18 hours a day to run the government and also fight with the opposition… God has created something different. Neither past nor future, India and its people are blessed.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Performing a Google keyword search, the NM team traced a news report by Zee News on May 30, 2018, featuring similar visuals. According to the report, “On the second day of his official visit to Indonesia, PM Modi flew a kite with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.”

The Navbharat Times website, dated May 30, 2018, also carries news related to the video, saying: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Joko Widodo at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. In a joint statement of both countries, PM Modi targeted terrorism. Both countries signed 15 MoUs. PM Modi also visited a mosque in Indonesia during Ramadan and flew a kite.”

Searching further, we also found a video news report by IndiaTV, dated May 30, 2018, carrying the same viral video with a title: “PM Modi and Indonesian President Widodo fly kites at a Kite exhibition in Jakarta”.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video of PM Modi flying kites in Indonesia is falsely linked to Makar Sankranti celebrations.
