Fact Check: 2023 Viral Clip Erroneously Linked To Drone Strike In Jordan

Date:

The killing of three Americans at Tower 22 near the Jordan-Syria border marks a notable escalation in the already fragile situation in the Middle East. Authorities report that the drone responsible was launched by militants backed by Iran and seemed to originate from Syria. Amid this context, a video has surfaced on social media claiming it was from a drone strike and the Iranian proxy groups have carried out a suicide drone strike in Jordan.

A Facebook user posted with a caption: “Iranian proxy groups have killed three U.S. Army soldiers & wounded 30+ more in a suicide drone strike in Jordan. The U.S. won’t tolerate such deadly attacks and there are more reports indicating that a major wave of airstrikes is imminent in the region.”

Here is the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team traced an X post, dated July 05 2023, with a caption: “If you want war with the U.S. there’s one thing I can promise, so help me god: someone else will raise your sons and daughters.”

The video matches with the viral clip, describing that it was an Independence-Day appreciation post.

The Independence Day in the U.S. (4th July) is a celebratory holiday that marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

We also found a report by Reuters, dated January 29, 2024, with a headline: “Iran says it has no link to a drone strike in Jordan that killed U.S. soldiers.”

According to the report, “Iran views claims that it is involved in an attack that killed three U.S. service members in north-eastern Jordan near Syria’s border as ‘baseless’, foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani has said. Kanaani also said the continuation of U.S. strikes on Syria and Iraq as well as the war in Gaza will only intensify a cycle of instability in the region.”

There is no evidence that Iran was behind the drone strike that happened recently in Jordan. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video has no relation with the suicide drone strike in Jordan.
