Fact Check: Edited Image Showing Bin Laden And Bush Sitting Together Viral With False Claims

A viral image showing a grainy image of former US President George W. Bush sitting at a table surrounded by other men, including a man in a white turban is doing rounds on social media. Users are sharing the picture speculating that the man in the white turban is Osama Bin Laden sitting at the same table as George W Bush.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

Bush, Rumsfeld, Rice and Timothy Osman (aka Bin Laden). I wonder what this meeting was about … more importantly, WHEN was this meeting?

You can check the post here.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post and found the claims to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture led us to a Photo Gallery on the official website of the US Department of Defence. The picture matches with the viral image except for the man in the white turban. Here we can see someone else sitting at the table in place of the turban man.

According to the description beneath the image, the image shows the then Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld (second from left) introducing his staff members to President George W. Bush at their Pentagon meeting on September 12, 2001. The person next to Rumsfeld is Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz. He is missing in the viral image and has been replaced by the person in white turban.

Taking a cue from this, we searched for the image further and landed on another picture on Getty Images published on September 12, 2001. Here too, we can see Wolfowitz sitting next to Rumsfeld, thereby clarifying that the viral image has been edited.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show a picture of Osama Bin Laden sitting at the same table as George W Bush, is false.
