Date:

New Delhi: Massive traffic jams ensued on the Delhi-Noida border on Thursday as police personnel were deployed to inspect vehicles following a farmers’ protest in Noida and Greater Noida, according to officials quoted by PTI.

During attempts by farmers to enter the national capital, police personnel with heavy equipment remained vigilant, aiming to control movement on the road near Mayur Vihar at the Delhi-Noida borders.

A senior Delhi Police officer at the border mentioned that while traffic was permitted, there was a possibility of complete road blockage if deemed necessary.

“As of now, the Uttar Pradesh Police is dealing with them and hopefully they will not enter Delhi,” he said, adding long queues of vehicles choked the roads as several two-wheelers and four-wheelers were stuck in the jam at Sarita Vihar.

A heavy traffic jam took place on the Delhi-Noida highway. Simultaneously, heightened security measures have been implemented in the national capital in response to ongoing farmer protests. Officials stated that heavy-duty equipment, including bulldozers, backhoe machines, Vikrant logistic vehicles, riot control vehicles, and water cannons, were strategically positioned to address potential situations if farmers were to reach the area.

Over 150 farmers were halted near the Mahamaya flyover in Noida by the Uttar Pradesh Police, according to officials. In response to the situation, alternative traffic arrangements have been put in place, and commuters were advised to avoid specific roads.

Alternative traffic arrangements have been made and commuters were advised to avoid certain roads.

“Heavy security arrangements have been made in different border entry points in the national capital. No one will be allowed to breach law and order,” a senior police officer said.

In order to uphold law and order, significant security forces, along with paramilitary personnel, have been deployed, as indicated by another police officer.

Delhi Traffic Police anticipates heavy traffic on Thursday along routes connected to Soniya Vihar, DND, Chilla, Ghazipur, Sabhapur, Apsara, and Loni borders. Commuters are advised to steer clear of these areas or plan their journeys accordingly.

In preparation for the protests in Noida and Greater Noida, Section 144 was imposed on Wednesday and Thursday by the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police. A traffic advisory was also issued by the police, warning commuters about potential diversions on certain routes in the twin cities due to the farmers’ movement on tractors.

Since December 2023, farmer groups in Noida and Greater Noida have been staging protests, demanding increased compensation and the development of plots against their lands acquired by local development authorities in the past.
