Fact Check: Viral Post, Claiming Pakistan Govt. To Ban Social Media and Internet During Elections, Is Fake

Amidst the security concerns surrounding Pakistan’s upcoming general elections on February 8, a viral post has ignited online discussions, claiming that social media and Internet will face a shutdown in the country two days before and two days after the election.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: “Social Media And Internet Will Be Closed In Pakistan Two Days Before And Two Days After Election.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

With a Google Keyword search, the NM team found an X-post with a Facebook post link by the ministry of information & broadcasting, Pakistan, dated February 05, 2024, clarifying that the viral claim is false and no guidelines have been given by the government to block mobile phones and Internet on the occasion of elections.

Searching through the Facebook page of the ministry of information and broadcasting, Pakistan, our team found the post attached to a tweet.

In a statement, Pakistan Federal Information Minister Murtaza Solangi refuted the claim and stated that there is fake news and propaganda on social media.

“No guidelines have been given by the government to shut down mobile phones and Internet on the occasion of elections. If the peace and order situation deteriorates somewhere, the local administration can examine the situation itself and decide.” the statement reads.
We also found an X post by Public News and multiple reports clarifying that the claim ahead of the elections.
Hence, it is confirmed that the viral claim is false.
