Amidst the ongoing violence in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, a post is circulation online with a claim that the Muslim population of Haldwani was only 1,000 twenty years ago and that the current Muslim population there has exceeded 1,00,000.
A Facebook user posted the viral video with the caption:अगर आप पूछें कि एनआरसी अनिवार्य क्यों है तो जवाब है #हल्द्वानी 20 साल पहले हलद्वानी तहसील में 1000 से भी कम मुस्लिम आबादी थी. आज उनकी संख्या 1 लाख से अधिक है। अधिकांश बांग्लादेशी और रोहिंग्या हैं जिन्हें पीएफआई और तथाकथित धर्मनिरपेक्ष पार्टियों ने बसाया था। अब वे हलद्वानी को जला रहे हैं। एनआरसी नही लागू किया तो कल पूरा देश जलाएंगे।
(English Translation: If you ask why NRC is mandatory then the answer is #हल्द्वानी 20 years ago there was less than 1000 Muslim population in Haldwani tehsil. Today their number is more than 1 lakh. Most are Bangladeshis and Rohingyas who were settled by PFI and so-called secular parties. Now they are burning Haldwani. If NRC is not implemented, the entire country will be burnt tomorrow.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE.
To verify the claim, our team searched for data from the 2001 census. We discovered a document titled ‘C-01: Population by Religious Community, Uttaranchal – 2001’ on the government census website within the ‘Population by Religious Community’ section. It’s important to note that Uttarakhand was Uttaranchal until 2007.
Upon careful examination of the population data for Haldwani, we found that the total population amounted to 4,97,869, with the Muslim population being 80,436.
We further looked for the data from the 2011 census and came across a document titled ‘C-01: Population by religious community, Uttarakhand – 2011.’ Our investigation revealed that the population of Haldwani experienced a decline from 2001, with the total population standing at 36,4,128. The Muslim population was recorded at 67,559.
Thus, it is clear from the above findings that the viral claim in the caption of the videos shared, that the Muslim population went from 1,000 to more than 1,00,00, is misleading.
The claim was being shared on Facebook with several other videos, some of which we could verify as they were also posted by news agencies. However, NewsMobile independently could not verify all the videos. Nevertheless, we can conclusively prove that the claim made in the caption is false.
