NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post and found it to be misleading.

Running a reverse image search on the video keyframes, our team discovered the original video on the Congress party’s X account (formerly known as Twitter), dated February 8, 2024, with the caption: A journalist asked me, “Rahul ji, you are talking about caste census and rights, so is this not dividing the country?” I asked him in response, “In the media, how many newspaper owners are from backward, Dalit, tribal classes? – He became silent. I said that there are about 50% OBCs, 15% Dalits and 8% tribals in the country. This total was 73%. That means you are not giving anything to 73% people, then how can India join?

The video is from Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, during which he addressed a public rally. Upon closer examination of the video, it was evident that the Congress leader did not make the mathematical error. In the video, the Congress leader can be heard correctly stating that 50 + 15 + 8 equals 73.

Our team further uncovered the full speech on the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress party with the title: “LIVE | Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra | Jharsuguda to Raigarh | Chhattisgarh | Rahul Gandhi.”

The Congress leader can be seen discussing the caste census. He highlights a question posed by a journalist regarding whether the caste census would foster division in the country. Gandhi, addressing the question, points out that approximately 50% of the population comprises OBCs, 15% are Dalits, and 8% belong to tribal communities, totaling 73% of the population.

At the 19:30 mark in the original speech on YouTube, Rahul Gandhi states, “It is said that about 50–55% of people in the country are from backward castes, 15% are Dalits, and 8% are Adivasis. How much is it in total? How much is 50+15+8? 73.”

Thus, it is evident that Rahul Gandhi did not commit a mathematical error in his speech, and the video circulating is edited and misleading. Therefore, the viral claim is False.
