Fact Check: 2022 Video Of Patiala Clashes Erroneously Linked to Current Farmers’ Protest In Delhi

Date:

Since farmer unions called for the “Delhi Chalo” march, social media has been flooded with content supporting or opposing the protests. Alongside this, the Khalistan narrative is gaining traction online. A video allegedly showing armed Sikh men entering premises, attacking a shop worker and brandishing swords around police officers is being widely circulated on social media claiming that “Khalistani terrorists” are attacking a temple.

A Facebook user posted the viral clip with a caption: “#खालिस्तानी आंतकियों ने मन्दिर पर किया हमला और फिर कंजर डांस करते हुए 👺 😡गंदी मानसिकता दे गंदे अंडे दी पैदाईश।”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Running a Reverse Image Search on video keyframes, the NM team traced a video report by Republic World, dated April 30, 2022, carrying similar visual with a title: “Patiala News | New Video Of Temple Attack During Pro-Khalistani-Shiv Sena Clashes Accessed.”

In the initial frames of the video, an anchor can be heard saying: “This is a video of the attack in Patiala when clashes erupted between Khalistani supporters and members of a Hindu organisation outside the Maha Kali temple in Punjab’s Patiala district.”

A video of the clash, which was shared by news agency ANI on April 29, 2022, also depicted premises identical to those seen in the viral clip. The caption reads: “#WATCH | Punjab: A clash broke out between two groups near Kali Devi Mandir in Patiala today. Police personnel deployed at the spot to maintain law and order situation.”

In April 2022, clashes broke out between two groups outside the Kali Devi Mandir in Patiala during a march opposing Khalistan.

Therefore, it can be concluded that a video depicting clashes between members of Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray) and a Sikh group in Punjab’s Patiala on April 29, 2022, has been falsely linked to the ongoing farmers’ protest.
