Fact Check: Are Protesting Nihang Sikhs From Punjab Offering Namaz? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A video showing people offering namaz is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have linked the clip to the ongoing farmers’ protest in Delhi with a communal angle. It is claimed that the protesting Nihang Sikhs are offering namaz in a mosque.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

हरियाणा बार्डर पर हंगामा कर रहे पंजाब के किसानों में बड़ी संख्या में निहंग सिख तलवार भालों से लैस है वे मस्जिद में नवाज पढ़ते दिखे

या तो ये मुस्लिम है जिन्होंने निहंग का भेष बनाया है

या ये निहंग है जिन्होंने इस्लाम धर्म अपनाया है ? गजबे है 🤔

(English: A large number of Nihang Sikhs, armed with sword bears, from Punjab are making ruckus at the Haryana border. They were seen reading Nawaz in the mosque.

Either it is Muslim who has disguised as Nihang

Or is this Nihang who has adopted Islam? It’s amazing 🤔)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team traced a Facebook post, dated March 22, 2022, on an unverified account, with a caption: Nihang Sikhs are offering namaz. But the timeline doesn’t match the ongoing protests, which started around mid-February 2024.

Another Facebook post on an unverified profile, dated August 2, 2021, carries a video with communal twist. But no information has been provided other than that.

Although we could not find the original source of the viral clip, given that it has been online since August 2021, it cannot be linked to the ongoing farmers’ protests. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post is fake.
