Fact Check: Was This Vintage Bicycle Used In India 100 Years Ago? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A picture of a bicycle is being shared on social media claiming that the bicycle was used at police stations in India about 100 years ago.

“लगभग 100 साल पहले यह दरोगा जी (थानेदार जी )की सवारी हुआ करती थी। आज उनके रौब दाब की कल्पना करना मुश्किल है। ,” the caption read. (English translation: About 100 years ago, this used to be the ride of Inspector Ji (Police Officer Ji). Today it is difficult to imagine this.)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, and found it to be false.

Running the image through Reverse Image search, the NM team found the same picture in a tweet from 2020. “German WWI Herrenrad Victoria military bicycle with spring tyres due to rubber shortages during the war,” the tweet reads.

We also found the same image on a website: onlinebicyclemuseum.co.uk.

The website has several pictures of the same bicycle, referring to as vintage German spring wheel bicycle, with a caption: “World War I German Bicycle: Herrenrad Victoria Model 12 with Mauser ‘GEW 88’ rifle.”

“The spring wheels were not on this bicycle when it was found in France, alongside an American WW1 Columbia Military Model. I managed to find the front spring wheel at Beaulieu Autojumble, and I got the rear spring wheel a year later from the US, just in time to use its photos in my book,” the author of the article, Colin Kirsche, wrote. He has also displayed the same image on Facebook along with other vintage bicycles.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the post in circulation is misleading.
