The stage is all set for the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League to kickstart from Friday.
Each year the tournament witnesses something new, let’s take a look at the new rules which players and fans will see in the 17th edition of the league:
Two Bouncers Per Over
Among the biggest changes from this season of the IPL, bowlers will be able to bowl two bouncers in an over instead of the prior restriction of only one. Whereas in the T20Is as per the ICC’s rules and regulations, only one short ball is allowed in an over. There are two bouncers allowed per over in tests and One Day Internationals (ODIs).
This strategic change aims to level the playing field between the bowler and the batsman. Following a successful trial of this rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the regulation will be put into effect.
Smart Replay System
The Smart Replay System is a cutting-edge technology set to revolutionize umpiring decisions. The device, which is powered by eight high-speed hawk cameras positioned all over the field, gives the TV Umpire real-time visuals so they can make decisions more quickly and accurately.
This system bypasses the requirement for a TV broadcast director to act as a mediator and gives the umpire immediate access to a greater variety of visuals, including split-screen views. This creative step forward has the potential to improve decision-making during matches by streamlining the review procedure.
Catch Verification Rule
BCCI has kept the provision of verifying a catch when a referral for stumping is requested during this season. The ruling is different from ICC norms, which state that the on-field umpire only examines stumping calls.
Notably IPL has adopted these changes, it has decide against adopting the stop clock rule, which is a departure from recent ICC playing conditions for white ball international matches. The 17th edition of the IPL will start with five-time champion Chennai Super Kings facing off against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai.
