Fact Check: Images Of London Eye Being Shifted To Banks Of Loch Lomond Is Viral With Fictitious Claims

Date:

A viral post showing the dismantling of the London Eye is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim it is being dismantled to take it to the banks of Loch Lomond, where it was originally planned to be erected. According to few others, the tourist attraction was leased to the city of London for 25 years.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:  Footage from London today as the former “London Eye” is dismantled, ready for the long journey to the banks of Loch Lomond. Originally planned as a tourist attaction for Loch Lomond, it was leased to the City of London for 25 years, now expiring. EDIT — just had a travel update in.  The Loch Lomond Aye as it will be known will be moved through Scotland over the Easter weekend.  The 2 mile long convoy of sections will be moving at 10mph.  Police have advised to expect some delays.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral pictures, the NM team spotted a stock image on Alamy, which matches with one of the viral pictures suggesting that the London Eye is lifting above the London skyline with the Houses of Parliament in the background. The wheel has been used as part of the millennium celebrations enabling visitors a birds eye view.

Searching further, we came across a news article in Timeout, dated March 13, 2024. According to the article, the London Eye was originally scheduled to be dismantled after five years and its current lease expires in 2028. The London Eye was, indeed, taken on lease for five years and the lease got extended every time.

Additionally, the landmark operators have applied for an extension after the expiry of the current lease in 2028, but there is no update on that yet.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming London Eye is getting dismantled to shift to Loch Lomond, is false.
