Fact Check: Did PM Modi Utter ‘Congress Ki Vidhwa’ Term Referring To Sonia Gandhi? Here’s The Truth

Date:

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate sparked controversy on March 25, 2024, with an Instagram post concerning Kangana Ranaut, leading to demands from the BJP for the immediate removal of the grand old party’s social media head for what they deemed a “disgusting comment”. The post, featuring an image of Kangana with an objectionable caption, has since been removed. Kangana Ranaut, BJP’s candidate from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh, also responded to Shrinate’s remarks, asserting that she has portrayed diverse roles in films and emphasised the importance of dignity for every woman.

Amidst this, a video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech has surfaced on social media, mocking his remarks regarding “widows” made during the election campaign. They allege that PM Modi was directing his remarks against Sonia Gandhi.

A Facebook user posted with a caption: “PM Modi addressed Sonia Gandhi ji as ‘Congress Ki Vidhwa’ & no one took stand for her, Kangana Ranaut playing victim card over a post done from hacked Instagram to win #Mandi LS election. Feel for Sonia Gandhi who took all the sufferings silently💔 #KanganaRanaut.”

The above post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Conducting a reverse image search on the video keyframes, our team viewed the full video on the official YouTube handle of PM Modi, dated December 4, 2018, with a title: “PM Modi addresses public meeting at Jaipur, Rajasthan.”

During his rally in Jaipur on December 4, PM Modi criticised the Congress Party over several corruption allegations. Although he did not mention any names, many interpreted his remarks as directed towards Sonia Gandhi. Modi specifically addressed the issue of the widow pension scheme, stating that during Congress rule, thousands of widows were listed in government records who did not exist, and funds were deposited into these accounts. At the 42nd minute of his original speech, Modi began discussing this matter.

The transcription of the exact portion of his speech, which is the bone of contention, reads: “Hamare desh mein, Congress ne aise sarkar chalayi ki jo beti paida nahin hui, jis beti ka janam nahin hua, wo Congress sarkaron ke kagaz pe vo beti vidhwa bhi ho gayi aur beti ka vidhwa pension bhi milna bhi shuru ho gaya… Yeh rupiye kaun kaun vidhwa thi jo leti thi? Yeh Congress ki kaunsi vidhwa thi, jiske khate mein rupiya jata tha?”

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the 2018 video has been shared with false narratives.
