Washington, DC: In a bid to address escalating tensions between the United States and China, President Joe Biden engaged in a telephonic conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, as confirmed by the White House on Tuesday. The conversation takes place against a backdrop of strained relations between the two global powers, marked by contentious disputes spanning trade, technology, and investment.
During their recent interaction, the two leaders engaged in a candid and constructive dialogue covering a spectrum of bilateral, regional, and global topics. The discussion encompassed areas of mutual cooperation as well as points of divergence.
President Biden highlighted the critical importance of upholding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, alongside emphasising the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. Expressing concerns, he addressed China’s support for Russia’s defense industrial base and its potential implications for European and transatlantic security.
Furthermore, President Biden reiterated ongoing concerns regarding China’s unfair trade policies and non-market economic practices, which have adversely impacted American workers and families.
Emphasising the need for action, he underscored that the United States remains committed to taking necessary measures to safeguard national security, particularly regarding the utilisation of advanced US technologies. Importantly, he affirmed that such actions would be taken without unnecessarily restricting trade and investment opportunities.
President Biden and President Xi Jinping embraced the ongoing efforts to sustain open channels of communication through high-level diplomacy and working-level consultations in the coming weeks and months.
Both leaders welcomed the continued commitment to responsibly manage the bilateral relationship, recognising the importance of dialogue in addressing differences and advancing mutual interests. They expressed anticipation for upcoming visits by Secretary Yellen and Secretary Blinken.
The call follows the two leaders’ meeting in Woodside, California in November 2023.
