Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting on Thursday to assess the readiness for the ensuing heat wave season. During the meeting, the Prime Minister received a briefing on the temperature outlook for the period spanning from April to June 2024. The forecasts indicated a likelihood of above-normal maximum temperatures across the majority of the country.
The Principal Secretary to the PM, the Home Secretary, officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), and the National Disaster Management Authority participated in the meeting.
Preparedness in the health sector was reviewed in terms of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, ORS and drinking water, the Prime Minister’s Office stated.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the necessity of adopting a comprehensive whole of government approach to address the challenges posed by the upcoming heat wave season. He underscored the importance of coordination and collaboration among all arms of the government at the Central, State, and District levels, as well as various Ministries.
In addition, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the critical importance of awareness creation among the public and ensuring adequate preparation in hospitals. Furthermore, he stressed the need for swift detection and containment of forest fires.
