FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the video in question, and found it to be false.
Running the video keyframes through Reverse Image Search, the NM team discovered identical visuals in a TV news article titled “Devotees topple vehicles, damage them to make way for temple car festival in Mangalore”, dated April 4, 2024. According to the article, during the Bappanadu Durgaparameshwari temple’s Rath Yatra, devotees took action to clear the path for the chariot by removing obstructing vehicles.
As per other news reports, devotees overturned a car, a scooter, and an autorickshaw parked along the route where the chariot procession took place, purportedly to clear the path for the chariot. Subsequently, videos capturing this incident went viral on social media. Searching further, we also found conflicting information regarding the car owner’s name, listed as Venkatesh D, on some sites and as Divya on others.
The RTO vehicle information indicates the vehicle owner as Venkatesh D, while car info and Car 24 listed the owner as Divya. Notably, there were no Islamic names found in the vehicle information obtained from various sites.
Another TV9 Kannada report states that all devotees were involved in toppling and damaging vehicles along the chariot’s route. Therefore, we can conclusively say that devotees toppled and damaged the car to clear the path for the chariot, dispelling false communal implications since the car belonged to a non-Islamic owner.
