Ahead of the upcoming general elections, a video showing few people being heckled by a crowd is widely shared on social media, claiming that a mob attacked BJP members in Manipur.
The post reads: 400 पार का सपना देखने वालो को गिफ्ट मिल रहा हैँ मणिपुर में, आपलोग भी देख लीजिये (English translation: Those who dream of crossing 400 are getting gifts in Manipur, you also take a look.)
Here’s the link to the above post(archive).
FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.
While looking for more posts, we found a longer version of the same video shared by Facebook users in December 2020, with similar claims.
In the video, we noticed BJP’s Bengal unit President Dilip Ghosh. Searching further, the NM team found many media organisations carrying the reports in 2017, featuring similar clips.
The title of a news bulletin, uploaded by ABP News on October 6, 2017, reads: “Attack on BJP President Dilip Ghosh in Darjeeling.”
In 2017, he was allegedly attacked by activists of the anti-Bimal Gurung faction of Gorkhaland Janmukti Morcha.
The same incident had also been covered by Republic TV.
NewsMobile debunked the same video in 2020 and 2022, when it was falsely linked to Assam and Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Hence, it is clear that the video is old and shared with false claims.
