Lok Sabha Polls: ECI Halts West Bengal Governor’s Proposed Visit To Cooch Behar

Date:

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intervened to halt the proposed visit of West Bengal Governor, CV Ananda Bose, to Cooch Behar scheduled for 18-19 April. According to reports by ANI, the visit was set to take place during the silence period, which is in violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) currently in effect due to ongoing elections.

In its communication, the ECI emphasized that no local programme or function can be organized for the Governor during the silence period and on poll days. The polling body also cited logistical concerns, including the deployment of the police force for election management duties during this crucial period.

Given that the entire district administration and police force will be fully engaged in election management on 18-19 April 2024, the ECI highlighted the impracticality of diverting personnel for security arrangements related to the Governor’s visit.

Additionally, the ECI pointed out the commencement of the silence period on Wednesday evening, further underscoring the need to prevent any potential disruption to the electoral process.
