Fact Check: BJD MLA’s 2022 Car Mishap Clip Falsely Shared As BJP Leader Beaten Up Asking For Votes In Name Of Religion

Date:

Amidst the ongoing Lok Sabha Election, a video of a mob attacking a vehicle has been circulating on social media. Many users claim that the people are beating up a BJP leader who had gone to seek votes in the name of religion.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: बहुत मेहनत लगती है भरोसे वालों को जूते फेंक-फेंककर मारने में… (English Translation: It takes a lot of hard work to beat up trusted people by throwing shoes…)

The video also carried the text saying: धर्म के नाम वोट मांगने गया B.J.P नेता की धुलाई. Good job काश ऐसे ही हिन्दुस्तान का हर बे रोजगार जाग जाए मजा आ गया वीडियो देखकर (English Translation: BJP leader beaten up for asking for votes in the name of religion. I wish every unemployed person in India would wake up like this. Had fun watching the video.)

Fact Check

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be misleading.

Upon running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team found a YouTube video on Kalinga TV, dated March 12, 2022, with a title: Lakhimpur Kheri in Odisha: Over 20 Injured As Chilika MLA Prashant Jagdev’s Car Runs Over Crowd.

Upon comparing the viral video with the Kalinga TV YouTube video keyframes, we found them to be similar.

We also discovered another YouTube video on OTV, dated March 13, 2022, with a title: “Chilika MLA Prashant Jagdev’s Car Runs Into Crowd | BJD Condemns Act | Reaction Of MP Munna Khan.” We found both the videos were quite identical.

Searching with keywords about Chilika MLA Prashant Jagdev’s car accident, we found a report by The Indian Express, dated March 13, 2022, with a title: “Odisha: 22 injured as Chilika MLA rams car into crowd, leader assaulted later.”

According to the report, Chilika BJD MLA Prashant Jagdev was beaten up by people after he allegedly rammed his car into a crowd in Khurda district of Odisha. At least 22 people, including seven police personnel, were injured in the incident.

Thus, it is clear that the viral video in question is fake as it does not show any BJP leader being beaten up for asking for votes in the name of religion.
