Fact Check: 2023 Cong Hoardings In MP With Inverted Tricolour Viral With Fake Claims

Date:

Before Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s Bengaluru visit, there were widespread online allegations that the party used the Indian flag upside down in hoardings advertising her rallies in the city. The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Upcoming Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rally posters in Bengaluru show Indian flag upside down, with green on top.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search of the viral video keyframes, the NM team traced a Facebook post, dated June 12, 2023, and shared by Prahlad Singh Patel, Minister of Panchayat Rural Development and Labour, Madhya Pradesh.

In the extended version of the viral video, Patel has criticised the state Congress unit for displaying banners with an upside-down tricolour. He highlighted Jabalpur’s significance as the cultural capital, where the Flag Satyagraha movement began with the hoisting of the tricolour in the town hall.

Searching further, we found reports in IBC24 and Zee News, in June 2023, where a BJP leader accused Priyanka Gandhi of disrespecting the national flag during her visit to Jabalpur to campaign for the Assembly Elections in 2023.

Another article in Nai Duniya showcased a picture of the banner under scrutiny. As per the report, BJP lodged an FIR against high-ranking officials of the Congress party for disrespecting the national flag.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video of an inverted tricolour on MP Congress banners has gone viral with false claims.
