Fact Check: Viral Picture Showing Indian Army Soldier Having Lunch In Scorching Sunlight Is, In Fact, AI-generated

An image of a soldier eating food on a sandy ground is doing the rounds on social media. It is being claimed that the picture is from Rajastrhan’s Barmer, which is known for extreme heat conditions.

The caption with the picture in Hindi reads: बाड़मेर की तपती दोपहरी में सूर्य प्रकाश में 48° डिग्री में बॉर्डर पर खाना खाता भारतीय सेना का जवान कितने लोग इसे like करेंगे (English translation: An Indian Army soldier eating food at the border in 48° degree temperature in Barmer.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above picture, and found it to be AI-generated.

While the picture looked authentic at first glance, on closely observing the image in question, we noticed several discrepancies in the uniform such as the shoulder patch seeming distorted and the colours of the Indian flag being merged.

Taking a cue from our observations, on putting the picture through AI-detection tools — Hive and AI or Not, it was revealed that the picture in question is AI-generated.

Hence, with the above findings, it can be concluded that the picture in question is NOT real, but AI-generated.
