Fact Check: Outdated Clip From Jharkhand Falsely Claims That Rahul Gandhi Visited Ayodhya After Filing His Nomination

Date:

In the midst of the ongoing election campaigns by political leaders for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, a video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi being heckled with chants of ‘Modi Modi’ is circulating on social media. Many users claim that the video is from Ayodhya, where the Congress leader visited after his nominations.

A Facebook user posted the video with a caption: Pappu became Brahmin again after filing nominations today, and went to Ayodhya! People welcomed him with Jai Sree Ram and Modi Modi chants…

A Facebook user made another similar claim by posting a video with a caption: “Rahul Gandhi visits Ayodhya after filing his candidature from Rae Bareli. Crowds shout ‘Modi Modi’. #ModiHaiToMumkinHai #CongressMuktBharatForever.”

Fact Check

NewsMobile fact checked the claim, and found it to be misleading.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team discovered a video report on the Republic World official YouTube channel, dated February 3, 2024, and titled: “Watch: Rahul Gandhi Embarrassed Again, Greeted With Modi-Modi Chants At Baba Baidyanath Dham.”

According to the video report, the footage is from Baba Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar in Jharkhand, NOT Ayodhya as claimed in the viral post. The video was taken during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in February, when he visited the Baba Baidyanath Dham.

After comparing both the viral video and the YouTube video report, we found them to be identical.

We came across an Instagram reel posted on the official BJP Gujarat handle, dated February 3, 2024, with a caption: “Chants of Modi-Modi echoed in front of @rahulgandhi at Sanatan’s Dham Deoghar, Baba Vaidyanath Dham.” The Instagram reel matches with the viral video.

Another report by Hindustan Times also features images of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Baba Baidyanath Dham. The Congress leader can be seen wearing the same attire in the images as seen in the viral video.

It’s worth noting that Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Wayanad on April 3, 2024, and from Rae Bareli on May 3, 2024. This timeline clearly indicates that the video cannot be after Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination. Thus, it is confirmed that Rahul Gandhi did not visit Ayodhya after his nomination. And the viral claim is false.
