Washington DC: NewsMobile editor-in-chief Saurabh Shukla in a conversation with Mirror Now about Donald Trump’s Hush Money Trial said that Trump’s trial may have an impact on the US elections 2024.
“It’s a sad thing for American democracy that such things are coming out”.
During his conversation, Shukla said that he has been talking to a lot of people both his supporters and others and this may have an impact.
While the ratings show Donald Trump continues to enjoy overwhelming support amongst his Republican Party voters he is in a neck-to-neck fight with President Biden. He added that as this trial unfolds many things come out and according to Shukla this will have a major impact, especially on women voters.
Shukla said that this will have some kind of an impact, especially on women voters because these are allegations Trump has faced earlier as well. He also talked about his interview with Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign where he asked Trump about his conversation with women and said Trump was sheepish about it.
Shukla further said there is a pattern of sorts and it remains to be seen how the American voters will take this as there is time for elections in the US. He said that Trump is also facing multiple court cases and he’s claiming that it is keeping him away from campaigning. On the question of how the American people on the ground are seeing the Trump trial, Shukla said that if we talk to Trump’s core supporters they buy Trump’s argument as some of them still feel that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump.
He added that these people are blindly supporting Trump and that the former President is being victimised. Shukla said that on the other hand, there are people who believe there is merit in these allegations and there is a pattern of such problems with the former President and we will have to see in which direction the wind will blow. He also said that there are many issues in front of the American electorates like reproductive rights, the Israel-Hamas issue where a lot of University Campuses are having protests, the economy and immigration is also one of the major issues.
Shukla said that these cases against Trump will have an impact on the way American voters will vote in this election.
Shukla said that he had some conversations with the people in Washington and some of the Democratic party strategists that there is a conscious attempt to stay away from these cases by citing that the American judiciary is independent and these cases are on their merit.
He added that the Biden administration has done it deliberately so that they are not seen interfering or commenting on these cases.
Shukla said that President Biden has made potshots at Donald Trump on various occasions like the White House correspondence dinner and various campaign speeches that he has made as he realises that Donald Trump has strong support from his supporters and poses a threat to Biden’s re-election. Shukla said that Biden is taking potshots at Trump but not commenting directly on the cases.
In the end, Shukla said that every democracy has its imperfections. People have seen such scandals erupting in US Politics, he said that we have also seen such scandals erupting in Indian politics where certain members of parliament are involved in scandals. Shukla said that any sexual violence or such a crime should not be happening and is unpardonable. But he says that the public memory seems to be short and said that November will be crucial but there are many stages before that.
